From September to December 2019, the Ministry of the Environment and The Finnish Terminology Centre carried out a terminology project, which resulted in a vocabulary entitled Rakennusperinnön suojelun käsitteitä (concepts on protection of the built heritage). The vocabulary contains 23 concepts which are given Finnish terms and definitions and Swedish term equivalents.

The aim of the project was to define concepts regarding protection of the built heritage as well as to harmonize existing definitions. Of particular interest were the concepts that are used in the Act on the Protection of the Built Heritage. However, some of the concepts that are used in the act were excluded from the vocabulary as they are defined in other Ministry of the Environment’s vocabularies published in the Interoperability platform.

In addition to the Ministry of the Environment and the Finnish Terminology Centre, the Finnish Heritage Agency and Ramboll Finland took part in the terminology work actively. The terminology workshops were also attended by KEHA-Centre (Development and Administrative Services Centre for public employment services) as well as the ELY Centres (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment) of North Ostrobothnia and Southeast Finland. The Regional Council of Ostrobothnia provided help with the Swedish term equivalents.
