The Terminological Vocabulary of Kela (Social Insurance Institution of Finland) – Health-related concepts (TSK 41)

TSK 41

In 2007 Kela (the Social Insurance Institution of Finland) and the Finnish Terminology Centre TSK initiated a conjoint terminology project whose aim is to harmonize the terminology used in the communication concerning the social security provided by Kela. As a result of the project the Terminological Vocabulary of Kela was created, which will be gradually expanded and updated. The first publication covers health-related concepts such as reimbursements for medical expenses, sickness allowances, occupational health care, disability benefits, rehabilitation organized and reimbursed by Kela and some pensions.

The Terminological Vocabulary of Kela describes the Finnish social security system from the point of view of legislation. The vocabulary is aimed at experts, who need to know the recommended terms used in connection with Kela and their meaning. The vocabulary is a great tool e.g. for law drafters, PR officers, editors and translators. The vocabulary can also be used to support data management and further help to develop retrieval, transmission, archiving and modeling of data.

The first published version of the Terminological Vocabulary of Kela defines around 300 concepts. The concepts are given Finnish term recommendations and Swedish equivalents. The relations between the concepts are illustrated with the help of concept diagrams. The first part of the vocabulary was completed in May 2010. The terminology project will continue with defining of the pension-related concepts during 2010. The definitions and notes will also be translated into Swedish.

In 2010 the vocabulary was published in PDF format and the information contained in the vocabulary was made available through the Terminology Centre's term bank TEPA.
