Terminology project on government grant activities to continue until end of 2020

In autumn 2020, the Finnish Terminology Centre will continue the terminology work, commissioned by the CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd., with the aim of drawing up descriptions for the key concepts related to government grant activities and activities supported by government grants. The work is carried out in order to support the development and digitalisation of government grant activities. Tuula Lybeck, Project Manager, sheds light on the goals and history of the project in her column (available in Finnish).

The previous phases of the terminology project were carried out in 2018 and 2019, and the work carried out in 2020 builds on those phases. Among the topics covered by the terminology are types of government subsidies, government grant activities and participants thereto, documents related to government subsidies, as well as administrative matters and actual administrative decisions. The corresponding sections of the terminology have been translated into Swedish and English, and they were circulated for comment in spring 2020. In autumn, the parts of the terminology that were circulated for comment will be finalised based on the feedback received. Moreover, work will continue to define concepts related to other topics, such as evaluation, planning and reporting, in Finnish.

The Glossary of Discretionary Government Grant Terms is being worked on by using methods of terminology work. These methods allow for drawing up definitions and term recommendations which reflect the underlying concept system. This, in turn, helps terminology users to understand differences and relations between the concepts.

Questions related to the terminology are being discussed in workshops attended by subject field experts from various ministries, agencies, organisations and associations.
