The Finnish Terminology Centre
The Finnish Terminology Centre (Sanastokeskus ry) offers information on and expert services related to terminology work, classification work, ontology work and concept modelling work for various target groups. The activities of the Terminology Centre are grounded in a thorough mastery of the theory of terminology and the practical methods based on it, and in further developing both the theory and practice.
The Finnish Terminology Centre (until 2004, the Finnish Centre for Technical Terminology, Tekniikan Sanastokeskus ry, and until 2021 The Finnish Terminology Centre TSK, Sanastokeskus TSK ry) is an association founded in 1974. Its main aims are to produce terminologies and ontologies that contain Finnish and Swedish, to further develop the methods of terminology work, and to maintain the expertise based on these methods.
The Terminology Centre is an independent expert body specialising in terminology. However, it relies on cooperation, joining forces not only with its members but also with other organisations interested in terminology – for example, with the Institute for the Languages of Finland, Nordic terminology organisations, standardisation bodies, and EU institutions.
The Terminology Centre’s activities include
- analysing and defining concepts in the contexts of terminology work, classification work, ontology work and concept modelling work
- consulting in terminology work and ontology work
- spreading information on terminology work and ontology work
- maintaining a reference library specialised in glossaries and dictionaries
- providing training in the methods of terminology work and ontology work, as well as further developing these methods
- international cooperation in the field of terminology.
