R & D and standardization

Although the Finnish Terminology Centre TSK is not really a research institute, we keep ourselves up-to-date with the theory of terminology. The systematic application of the theory is also one of our best assets in developing the methods of practical terminology work and using them in our projects. In addition, several research projects have been carried out by the Terminology Centre during the past few years, dealing with the development of the methods and tools for terminology work.

The Finnish Terminology Centre TSK keeps a special library which contains thousands of dictionaries, vocabularies and glossaries dealing with terminology in various subject fields and languages. The main focus of the collections is naturally on the Finnish language, but for example English, Swedish, German and French are also rather well covered.

Term service

Finnish Terminology Centre TSK's term service is the only language service in Finland specialized in the terminology of special subject fields. The idea of the service is simply to provide the customers with answers to questions concerning specific terminology problems ("terms on demand"). Most often the problem originates in a translation task and concerns term equivalents, for example, in Finnish, Swedish, English or German. Other typical questions deal with definition problems, term recommendations and the spelling of complex Finnish terms.

TEPA term bank

The TEPA is a term bank compiled and maintained by the Finnish Terminology Centre TSK. It contains special language terms and their definitions which are displayed as multilingual terminological entries. The Terminology Centre's own publications form the core of the TEPA, but it also contains other special subject vocabularies compiled by specialists. The TEPA has been available to the public since 1987. In 1997 it was made available free-of-charge on the Web.
