The KÄKÄTE Project (User Centered Technology for Elderly People and Care Givers) run by Vanhustyön keskusliitto (the Central Union for the Welfare of the Aged) and Vanhus- ja lähimmäispalvelun liitto Valli ry (The Union for Senior Services) started terminology work in 2012. The purpose was to create common terminology for elderly people, companies developing technological solutions and producers of old-age care. The Vocabulary of Gerontechnology was completed in November 2014.
The vocabulary contains central gerontechnology concepts in some special fields. The subject fields covered are e.g. devices and services of safety technology, and technical aids for remembering, moving, hearing and seeing, and devices and systems related to housing, entertainment, communication and access to information. The vocabulary aims at increasing the understanding of gerontechnology via clarifying concepts and unifying terms. It is directed at manufacturers, developers, importers and marketers of gerontechnology as well the users of different gerontechnological devices and services. The vocabulary can also be of use for e.g. students, experts and journalists.
The Vocabulary of Gerontechnology contains about 100 concepts which are clarified with the help of definitions and complementing notes. The vocabulary gives Finnish term recommendations and also lists synonyms and deprecated terms. The relationships between concepts are illustrated with concept diagrams. Because the target audience of the vocabulary is varied, technical details have been avoided in concept descriptions and instead the vocabulary's emphasis is on information useful for primary users and consumers.
The working group for the terminological project had representatives from The Union for Senior Services, The Central Union for the Welfare of the Aged, Aspa Foundation, The Accessibility Centre ESKE, National Institute for Health and Welfare, Toimiva koti DoMedi and the city of Vantaa.
